Adopt a Fire Hydrant

The Westville Fire Department would like to remind citizens, as they clear their driveways and sidewalks; to adopt a fire hydrant in your neighborhood and take care of it.  When taking care of your neighborhood hydrant please clear a path approximately 3 feet around the hydrant and shovel a path from the street or roadway up to the fire hydrant.  In removing the snow  from around the fire hydrant you will help the fire department quickly find and locate fire hydrants if need be. Fire hydrants that are blocked or concealed by snow may potentially delay gaining a water to quickly extinguish a fire. The Westville Fire Department wants to thank their residents and would like everyone to know that they appreciate their help in the removal of snow from around local fire hydrants.

Don't Let this be your neighborhood Fire Hydrant

Snow Falls in Westville

February 6th, 2010- With the large snow amounts of snow that landed in the tri-state area, over the past weekend, 12 members spent the better half of 48hrs around the clock, posting a Duty Crew in the firehouse to gain a faster response time to the residents of Westville in need of emergency care. Late Saturday after much of the snow had stop falling, the members got out their shovels and began digging out some uncovered fire hydrants throughout the borough of Westville. With snow totals over the 24’ inch mark, the height of the snow left many of the hydrants covered and hindered from the street. With 90% of the fire hydrants in the borough uncovered by night fall Saturday, on Sunday the members hit the streets to assist the School Board in getting the kids back to school on Monday, the members assisted in the removal of the snow from the walkways and steps of the Parkview Elementary School here in Westville, with our assistance the kids were back in school Monday with only a 1 hour delay. The fire department would like to thank those residents that took the time to clear the fire hydrants in their neighborhood.

Taskforce Eight Goes To Work in 'Big City'

January 21st, 2010 – At around 0700hrs Gloucester County Communications began receiving numerous calls, for a house fire in the 1100 block of Wesley Ave. The Fire Board quickly Struck Box 8-2345 for a dwelling fire at 1109 Wesley Avenue. Deputy Chief T. Gismondi arrived within minutes and was greeted with fire showing from the basement windows. Deputy Chief Gismondi advised the Fire Board to strike the All Hands box which added an extra engine and truck to the first alarm assignment. After his 360 of the residence, he confirmed all occupants were safely on the exterior. With 801 (Chief Mark Gismondi) on scene assuming command Ladder Company 736 went responding with a staffing of 5,  the chief ordered the ladder to come in Columbia Blvd to rear of house and go in service with ventilation and prepare for ladder pipe operations. The crew from the Engine 811 arrived and stretched a 1 ¾ handling to the front door and began trying to make some head way on the fire in living room which was well involved at the point. The Ladder company stretched a second line to the basement bilco doors to begin suppressing the fire in the basement. While entering the living room the crew from 811 encountered a large hole in the living floor and backed out, the Chief order companies to perform a semi defense attack. With the secondary companies arriving, they were now faced with opening up many void spaces in the residence due to renovations. Firefighters would work for the next 2 hours trying to bring the job under control. An extra engine co. was requested for a secondary water supply but was not used on arrival. In all companies operated 3 - 1" 3/4 hand lines off 811 and 42' of ground ladders off 736. Two occupants were transported to local hospitals, there were no firefighter injuries. The fire is under investigation by the Gloucester County Fire Marshals Office.

Adopt a Fire Hydrant

December 22nd - With the recent snowfall of well over 20 plus inches of snow in and around the Borough of Westville.
