Westville Fire Department history and culture. The Colors of our trucks!
The colors are our history from the Maxim Apparatus from Union (Red) and the Mack Apparatus from Independent (White) Fire Companies. When starting a new Department we wanted to keep our history and traditions; the official colors are Maxim Motor Company Red and Mack Stock White.
The history actually starts 6 months before the merger. As the meetings were on going and the date was set for January 1, 19…88, the Independent Fire Company had a Ford/Marion Rescue Truck on line being built and the original colors were their colors of Mack Stock White and Brigade Blue.
Through discussion within the merger meetings, the committee asked if the Brigade Blue could be changed to Maxim Red. It was taken back to the membership of Independent and they voted unanimously to change the color. That Rescue Truck was delivered in August 1987, red and white the, department’s new colors!
Today the tradition continues, the fleet is painted Maxim Motor Company Red and Mack Stock White. In addition to the colors, the paint break angles through the body of the trucks, taking the white from the roof area into the body. Since the main body was red, this was added to include more white in the trucks. By adding more red, the angle paint break was a compromise that the department agreed on in 1991.
The concept of the angle in the paint came from Independents 1982 Ford/Pierce Rescue Truck.
You can see today the entire fleet matches the colors and the paint angle is our tradition.
We remember and honor our past by keeping part of it in the present
